Common App Changes Every Family Should Know This Year #commonapp #collegeadmissions

What do families need to know before the Common Application opens on August 1st for Fall 2025 college applicants? Here’s what’s changing — and what to look out for.

Starting August 1st, the Common Application officially opens for students applying to start college in the Fall of 2026. Here are the key updates families should know:

1. Portfolio Submissions:
Some majors require students to submit a portfolio as part of their application.
This requirement — and the exact instructions — will show up on August 1st when the application opens.

Here’s how it works:
– Once your teen selects their major, the application will indicate whether a portfolio is required
– If it is, the instructions will be posted directly in the Common App under that school’s section
– Some colleges require the portfolio to be submitted with the application, while others will provide a separate deadline

In some cases, the student may receive a follow-up email with a link to a separate portal, where they’ll upload the portfolio and any additional materials.
This email typically comes within 24 hours of submitting the main application.

If your student is applying to a portfolio-based program, it’s best to contact the admissions office directly for specific details.

2. COVID Question Update:
The previous COVID-19 question is being rephrased this year.
Students will now see a question about whether they experienced any academic, personal, or social challenges.
They can select Yes or No — and if they choose Yes, they’ll have the opportunity to write a short explanation (up to 300 words).

3. Additional Essays:
Colleges and universities can now add new, school-specific essays to the Common App.
These new prompts will go live on August 1st, so be sure to check each school for updates.

 Visual Updates:
The layout and appearance of the application are getting a refresh, but the content and sections remain the same.

Application Limit:
Students can still apply to up to 20 colleges using the Common App.

Last-Minute Changes:
Any final updates or system-wide announcements will be shared directly with registered students and counselors on or after August 1st.

Staying on top of application changes doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
