How Do Colleges Support Students with IEPs and 504 Plans? #collegeapplication #collegeadmissions

Can students with an IEP or 504 plan still go to college and have access to the full college experience?

The answer is yes. Your student absolutely can go to college, and they can still have a full and meaningful experience.
But it is important to understand how the support systems change after high school.

On the actual college application, your student does not need to disclose their IEP or 504 plan unless there is a clear gap in education or a drop in grades that you want to explain.
Otherwise, this is private information and not required in the initial application.

If your student is currently receiving accommodations through an IEP or 504, it is still possible to attend a four-year university.
In fact, many colleges have strong support systems in place. While some high school counselors may suggest community college by default, that is not the only option.

The key is knowing which colleges actively support students with learning differences and understanding what documentation is required.

Your student will need a copy of their IEP or 504 plan, an updated triennial report, and any current medical or psychological assessments, depending on the type of accommodation.

Some colleges, especially public institutions and larger private universities, offer dedicated disability resource centers. These offices help students set up accommodations, secure funding, and stay on track academically.

It is also important to know that not all colleges handle this the same way. Some smaller or private colleges may not have the infrastructure to fully support an IEP or 504, so always ask.
Call the admissions office or the disability support office to find out what is offered and what documentation is required to receive accommodations.

If your student has an IEP or 504 plan, college is still absolutely possible.
The most important thing is to plan ahead, gather the right documents, and know what to ask for.
