Key College Application Deadlines for 2026 to 2027 Applicants #collegeapps #collegedecision #college

Parents — if your teen is applying to college this year, these are the 2026–2027 deadlines you can’t afford to miss.”

Students, if you’re heading into senior year, the college process has already begun.

The Common App is already open, so students can start adding their basic information now. On August 1, the application refreshes when colleges add their school-specific questions and essays. Students will not lose the information they already entered, but they will need to go in and reset the application so it enters all the information into Common App..

August is also when many essay prompts become available on college websites. This is the time to start looking at what each school is asking for, especially if your student is applying to several schools that require extra essays.

FAFSA is expected to open on October 1. The earlier families submit it, the earlier colleges can use that information when they build a financial aid package. Your student will usually receive their acceptance first, and then the financial aid package may come later, often around 30 days after.

Families should also check if a college requires the CSS Profile. This is usually required by some private colleges, and if the school asks for it, it is typically due around the same time as FAFSA.

November is a big month for Early Decision and Early Action Applications. Early Decision is binding, which means if your student is accepted, they are committing to that school. Families need to understand that before applying because there is no backing out unless there is a serious financial reason.

Early Action is different. It is usually due around the same time, but it is not binding. If your student is accepted through Early Action, they still have until May 1 to make their final decision.

November is also when the UC system, Cal States, and schools like the University of Washington usually have their deadlines. .

In December, students will receive Early Decision acceptances or rollovers. If your student is accepted Early Decision, families usually have a short window, often two to three weeks, to submit the nonrefundable deposit.

December and January are also when many Regular Decision applications are due. If your student has a lot of applications and a lot of essays, do not leave everything for Christmas break. Spread the work out earlier so the applications are stronger and less rushed.

January is a great time to review local scholarships that are being posted in your community.  They have deadlines soon but your student has just finished applications.

February, March, and April are when many students receive admissions decisions. Then May 1 is Decision Day. That is when students usually need to commit to a college and submit their nonrefundable deposit.

The big thing for families is to stay organized. Every college can have a different deadline, a different portal, and different financial aid requirements, so check each school carefully and keep track of what is due.
