If your student is heading to college this fall, here are the key dates and deadlines to know in May.

The first big date is May 1, which is commitment day at many colleges. Your student needs to submit a deposit to the school they plan to attend. Even if they are still on a waitlist somewhere else, they still need to secure a real option by that deadline.

After that, families need to move quickly on the next steps. Dorm deposits may be due right away, and students should find out when they can meet with advising and register for classes. Some colleges also require math placement or English placement, so those should be completed as soon as possible. The more a student stalls, the further behind they can fall.

May is also when more waitlist acceptances may start coming out. Once colleges see how many students accepted their offers, they may open spots to students on the waitlist. If your student gets off a waitlist and decides to attend that school instead, they need to let the first college know they will not be enrolling there.

And of course, May is also graduation month. So while families are managing deposits, waitlists, and next steps, it is also a time to celebrate everything your student has accomplished.
