Parent PLUS Loan Limits and the Real Cost of College #collegeadvice #financialaid #collegeapps

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act could limit how much parents are able to borrow through Parent PLUS loans for college. Here’s what families need to know.

The big issue here is that families may not be able to rely on Parent PLUS loans the same way they have in the past. The current federal changes tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act include a $20,000 annual limit per student for Parent PLUS borrowing and a $65,000 aggregate cap for your freshman student, with the new limits applying to new borrowing starting July 1, 2026.

This matters because many families use Parent PLUS loans to help cover the gap after scholarships, grants, and the student loan are applied. If that Parent PLUS amount is capped, parents may need to cover the rest through savings, payment plans, or private loans.

Let’s use USC as an example. If the cost of attendance is $97,000 and the student receives a $50,000 scholarship, that still leaves $47,000 to cover. If the student uses the federal student loan and the parent uses a $20,000 Parent PLUS loan, there is still a large gap left over that the family has to figure out on its own. USC’s published undergraduate cost of attendance is in that range for 2026 to 2027.

Families also need to think about the full four-year picture. If Parent PLUS borrowing is more limited, the gap may get harder to manage year after year, especially at expensive private universities. The federal changes also include a transition exception so students already enrolled in a program with prior borrowing may be able to continue under older loan programs while they finish.

So the practical takeaway is this. Do not assume federal loans will cover the cost. Look at the scholarship, look at the student loan, look at the Parent PLUS amount, and then figure out what your family would need to cover after that. That conversation needs to happen NOW.
