Should Families Consider Community College as a First Step? #collegeadmissions #communitycollege
Is community college the right choice for your student — even if it’s not part of the original plan?
Community college is one of the most overlooked — and often misunderstood — options in the college planning process.
A lot of families hesitate to consider it. I hear it all the time:
“We want the full college experience.”
“We want our child to go away to school.”
But sometimes, that path just isn’t the right fit — at least not right now. And that’s okay.
What I always tell families is this:
Stop listening to the noise.
This isn’t about your neighbor’s kid or your child’s best friend.
This is about your student — and what they’re ready for.
Ask yourself: is my student ready to live on their own?
Can they manage the basics — like doing laundry, finding food, setting boundaries, and making decisions without daily support?
More importantly, can they handle the responsibilities of showing up for class, introducing themselves to professors or TAs, managing their time, and staying accountable when no one is watching?
Do they feel safe, balanced, and ready to thrive in a new environment far from home?
These are the questions we help families ask — and sometimes, the answer leads us to community college as the best next step.
Now let’s address the other common myth:
That community college is only about saving money.
It’s true — community college is much more affordable than a four-year university. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only low-cost option.
Some four-year schools offer generous financial aid packages, even for students who want the full residential experience. So don’t make financial decisions in isolation.
If your student has a strong GPA — say, 3.3 or higher — and is eager to go away, don’t rule that out just because of cost. Let us help you explore all the options, because there may be a perfect fit out there with tuition fully or mostly covered.
But if your student is still finding their way, community college can be a smart, strategic choice — especially when the goal is transferring into a top-tier university later.
The right path is the one that works for your student — not someone else’s.
