The Story Behind the Cal Poly Maritime Transition #collegeadvice #calpoly #history

Cal State Maritime has a long and unique history within the California State University system. It was originally founded in 1929 as the California Nautical School in Tiburon to train merchant marines. In 1940, the campus moved to Vallejo, where it became known as the California Maritime Academy.

For most of its history, Cal Maritime operated independently within the Cal State system and remained one of the smallest campuses. It was also, one of only a handful of maritime academies in the United States, known for its specialized programs in marine transportation, engineering, and global logistics.

In 1996, it officially became part of the California State University system and was renamed the California State University Maritime Academy, or Cal State Maritime. Despite the new name, it continued to function as a small, highly specialized campus serving students preparing for leadership roles in the maritime industry.

In 2025, the California State University system announced that Cal State Maritime would merge with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, formally becoming Cal Poly Maritime. The goal of the merger was to strengthen academic resources, expand research opportunities, and align the academy with Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing approach.

While Cal Poly Maritime will continue to serve students interested in maritime studies, the transition marks a new chapter in its history. The integration into the Cal Poly system connects one of California’s oldest maritime academies with one of its most recognized technical universities, combining tradition with innovation for the future.

The story of Cal Poly Maritime reflects how California’s higher education system continues to evolve to meet new needs. If you want to learn more about how these transitions affect admissions or academic programs, reach out.
