What’s the Difference Between Weighted and Unweighted GPA? #collegeadvice #collegeadmissions

What is the difference between a weighted and unweighted GPA, and which one should students focus on when applying to college?

This is a common question during the college application process, especially for students deciding whether to take AP, honors, or IB courses.

Here is my advice. I always recommend going for the A.
A strong transcript with a 4.0 unweighted GPA often looks better than a 3.8 GPA with a 4.0 weighted.

Why does that matter?

When your transcript is uploaded into the application, the admissions team will see your grades alongside your course selections.
Next to each class, the application asks whether the course was AP, honors, or IB. That is where you check yes.

This gives colleges the full context of both your academic rigor and your performance.

Of course, a robust 4.0 with a high weighted GPA is ideal. But if your student is struggling to keep up with the pace of an advanced class, it is okay to take a step back.
If an AP or honors course is too fast or overwhelming and your student is unlikely to get an A, it may be better to take a standard course and succeed in it.

Colleges care about growth, consistency, and overall academic success.
They are looking at the full picture, not just the GPA number.

Choosing the right classes is about more than boosting your GPA.
It is about building a transcript that shows effort, balance, and growth.
