What’s the Right Number of College Applications for Seniors? #collegeadvice #collegeapplication

How many colleges should a high school senior apply to in order to stay competitive while still keeping the process manageable?

This is one of the most common questions I get — and the answer depends on your goals, your energy, and how many options you want to have at the end of the process.

To stay competitive, I often recommend applying to around ten schools.
That gives you room to consider different types of campuses, compare financial aid offers, and have some real choices to review in the spring.

Some people recommend more than ten schools, and in some cases, that makes sense.
But be careful not to overextend yourself. You want to be able to finish applications on time, keep your grades up, and still enjoy your senior year.

There is no perfect number, but a balanced list often includes a mix of in-state public schools and private colleges with different levels of selectivity.
That way, you are casting a wide enough net while still focusing on schools that fit your needs, goals, and personality.

What matters most is having options — not just for where you get in, but for comparing financial aid, campus culture, and academic programs.

College applications are not just about getting accepted — they are about creating options you feel good about.
