Why Do Letters of Recommendation Matter in College Admissions? #collegeadmissions #collegeadvice

If you’re a high school student applying to college, now is the time to get your letters of recommendation ready, and that starts with a brag sheet.

This is the time of year when students should be preparing to request their letters of recommendation.
Most colleges require at least one, and sometimes two or three, depending on the school.

Every student will receive one letter automatically from their high school counselor.
But the others will usually need to come from teachers, coaches, or other trusted adults.

Before making those requests, it is important to have a brag sheet ready.

A brag sheet is like a personal resume. It helps the person writing your letter understand your full story beyond the classroom.
It should include your:

  • GPA and academic standing
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Leadership roles
  • Community service
  • Passion projects
  • Awards or achievements
  • Hobbies and interests

Even if your recommender knows you well, they usually only see one side of you — in class, on the field, or in a club.
The brag sheet gives them the bigger picture and helps them write a more complete and compelling letter.

Once your brag sheet is ready, log into the college application portal and send your letter requests.
This might be through the Common App or another school-specific system.

After you submit the request, follow up with your recommenders.
Make sure they received it, thank them for their time, and let them know how much it means to you.

Strong letters of recommendation help colleges see who you are beyond your grades and test scores.
