How did UC Berkeley become one of the most competitive public universities in the world?

UC Berkeley was founded in 1868 as California’s first public university and became the original campus of the University of California system. From the start, it was designed to educate large numbers of students and serve the state of California, which shaped how big and influential it would become.

As California grew, Berkeley grew with it. The university expanded its academic programs and became known for strong teaching, research, and graduate education. Over time, Berkeley developed a reputation for producing students who went on to work in government, science, education, and industry.

One reason Berkeley became so influential is its role in shaping modern technology. In the 1970s, Berkeley researchers helped develop a version of the Unix operating system that became the foundation for many of today’s computers and servers. That work influenced how personal computers, the internet, and modern operating systems function today.

Berkeley alumni also played major roles in building the tech industry. Graduates went on to help create companies like Apple, Intel, Google, and Tesla. Many of the tools students use every day, laptops, phones, software, and online systems, are connected to work that came out of Berkeley classrooms and labs.

As Berkeley’s reach grew nationally and globally, more students applied, and admissions became more selective.

Today, Berkeley is considered one of the top public universities because of its long history of shaping technology, policy, and innovation, while still educating large numbers of students.
